Medical and dental office cleaning in Fresno: what's different
Why a medical or dental practice needs a different cleaning plan from an office, who cleans what, and what to ask a cleaning company before you trust them with your clinic.
By Scrubhub Cleaning ·
Medical and dental office cleaning is different from office cleaning in three ways: it happens more often, it uses disinfectants with proper contact times instead of quick wipes, and the cleaning crew has to know exactly which surfaces are theirs and which belong to your clinical staff. Get any of those wrong and you’ve got a problem an auditor or a patient will notice.
We clean several medical and dental practices across the Central Valley. This is how we think about the work, and what we’d want a practice manager to ask any company before handing over the keys.
Who cleans what in a clinic
This is the part most practices never write down, and it’s where things fall through the gaps.
In a dental office, the surfaces touched during treatment (the light handles, chair controls, the tray, the delivery unit) are cleaned and disinfected by your clinical staff between every patient. That follows your infection control program. The cleaning company comes in after hours and handles the building around them.
| Area | Usually cleaned by | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical contact surfaces (chair, light, tray, controls) | Your clinical staff | Between every patient |
| Treatment room floors, counters, sinks, walls, door handles | Cleaning company | Every clinic day |
| Waiting room, front desk, check-in surfaces | Cleaning company | Every clinic day |
| Patient and staff restrooms | Cleaning company | Every clinic day, plus restocking |
| Staff room, offices, hallways | Cleaning company | Every clinic day or a few times a week |
Put a version of that table in your cleaning agreement. When a surveyor asks who cleans what, you’ll have the answer on paper.
Disinfecting is not the same as wiping
A quick spray and wipe looks clean. It doesn’t do what a disinfectant label says it does.
Every disinfectant has a contact time printed on it: how long the surface has to stay wet to kill what the label claims. It might be one minute, it might be ten. If a cleaner sprays and wipes dry straight away, most of that work hasn’t happened.
That’s why medical cleaning takes longer per square foot than office cleaning, and why it’s priced higher. A crew that’s trained to healthcare cleaning standards works the room in an order that lets surfaces stay wet long enough, and uses separate cloths for restrooms and treatment areas so nothing gets carried from one to the other.
If a disinfectant is sprayed and wiped dry straight away, most of what the label promises hasn’t happened.
What the waiting room says about you
Patients can’t judge your clinical skill. They can judge your waiting room.
Fingerprints on the front door glass, a dusty vent above reception, a restroom that’s out of soap: patients notice all of it and assume the parts they can’t see look the same. In the Central Valley, dust settles on vents, baseboards and window sills faster than people expect, especially through the dry months and wildfire season. A daily clean that ignores high surfaces will look neglected within a few weeks.
Paperwork your practice may need
- A certificate of insurance showing liability cover. We carry $1M and workers’ comp, and our staff are bonded.
- A written scope of work, including the “who cleans what” split above.
- A cleaning log or checklist your office manager can see.
- Product information for the disinfectants used on site, if your compliance program asks for it.
We can share compliance documentation for the practices we clean. If your auditor asks for something specific, tell us at the walkthrough so it’s set up from day one.
Privacy and access
Your cleaners will be in the building with patient files, computers and controlled supplies. Ask how the crew is vetted, whether the same people come every night, and how keys and alarm codes are handled. A consistent crew is far easier to trust with a clinic than whoever is on shift.
A real example from our work
One of our dental clients in Clovis left this Google review: “Scrubhub has cleaned our dental practice for two years. The team is the same week to week, they understand what medical cleaning means, and the invoicing is clean and professional. They make running this place easier.”
Common mistakes practices make
- Hiring an office cleaner and assuming they know clinical spaces. Ask specifically about healthcare experience.
- Never writing down who cleans what. The gaps sit between clinical staff and the cleaning crew.
- Cleaning only on the days the clinic is quietest. Clean every day you see patients.
- Ignoring high dust. Vents above treatment chairs collect it, and patients lying back look straight at them.
- Changing cleaning companies often. Every new crew has to learn your rooms again.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How often should a medical or dental office be cleaned?
Every day you see patients, usually after the clinic closes. Restrooms and waiting areas may need a midday touch-up on busy days.
Does the cleaning company disinfect dental chairs?
Clinical contact surfaces like the chair, light and tray are normally cleaned by your clinical staff between patients. The cleaning company handles floors, sinks, counters, walls, door handles and the rest of the building. Agree the split in writing.
What's the difference between cleaning and disinfecting?
Cleaning removes dirt. Disinfecting kills germs, but only if the product stays wet on the surface for the contact time on its label. Medical cleaning needs both.
Is medical office cleaning more expensive than office cleaning?
Yes. It takes longer per square foot because of disinfecting, separate cloths and daily frequency. Our office cleaning cost guide shows the starting rates for general office space.
Do you clean medical and dental practices outside Fresno?
Yes. We clean across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, Sanger and Selma, usually in the evening after the clinic closes.
